So you have just become a mum, you have a million and one things to do and remember, it is all very overwhelming and now your hair has started to fall out.
Don't panick…….it is very common!
Post-partum hair loss is a type of hair loss that you can experience after you have given birth.
This can happen just a few days after your baby arrives and can last up to a year, but it is most commonly noticed about 3-6 months after the birth.
It is very common and around 90% of women will experience this to some degree, how long it lasts varies per individual.
This type of hair loss occurs due to a change in hormones. During pregnancy, normal daily hair shedding slows down so you will normally experience much thicker hair, and so after you have given birth and your hormone levels have dropped and returned to normal, your hair makes up for lost time and can shed out at a much quicker rate.
You do not need to worry, and it also doesn’t mean that all your hair is going to fall out. This would have been the hair that you would have naturally lost over the nine months but understandably it can be a bit of a shock when it then starts to come out.
You can be reassured that it won’t last forever but there are a few things that you can do to ensure that your hair growth remains healthy:
1.Nutrition
This is key. Make sure that you are eating the right foods and keeping your diet varied. This can be really difficult when a little person comes along. Try to get your daily intake of fruit and vegetables including leafy greens to ensure that you are getting your iron and protein as these are essential for healthy hair growth.
2. Hair Routine
Still keep your regular hair care routine. This includes washing and brushing it. Very often I find people avoid brushing their hair as they believe that this will make it fall out even more. This is not true in fact brushing your hair can stimulate the scalp and encourage your hair to grow.
3. Get out in the fresh air
People often underestimate the power of exercise and how much it can help the mind and body. Just a 30-minute walk can improve your mood, get the blood flowing, clear your mind and if the sun is shining you can also get some of that important Vitamin D (another important vitamin for hair growth).
4.Enoy being a mum
Enjoy your time with your baby. It is a special time and you don’t want it overrun with worry about your hair. If you have good nutrition and are keeping your body healthy your hair will return to normal in its own time.
